Kathleen Porter is the lead educator of EarthFriends programming for Harlem Ivy during the 2011-2012 academic year. Originally from Southern New Jersey she now lives in Manhattan, close enough to Teachers College that she walks there every day.

Kathleen went to Holy Cross High School in Delra, NJ where her favorite subjects were Science (especially Chemistry) and World Literature. Kathleen has been studying nutrition for years. She received an undergraduate degree in Dietetics from the University of Connecticut before coming to Teachers College to receive a master’s degree in Nutrition Education and a PhD in Behavioral Nutrition.

Kathleen loves that after-school activities provide a fun way to apply what is learned during the school day. She believes that after-school activities help students understand why the things they learn in school are important. She aims to lead activities that give students the opportunities to take ownership of their knowledge and skills while having fun. She can’t wait to share EarthFriends activities where students can apply math, literacy, and critical thinking skills as they prepare recipies and explore the food system.

In her spare time Kathleen likes to read books that have nothing to do with her school work. She also loves to run through Riverside and Central Parks. One of her most favorite things to do in New York City is to just walk around; she loves seeing so many cool buildings, meeting interesting people and finding great places to eat on her walks!
