Harlem Dowling-West Side Center at PS 161

Founded in 1836, Harlem Dowling is a non-for-profit multi-service agency providing out-of-home foster care, adoption, therapeutic placement, supportive housing for youth aging out of foster care, and other support services. Related services include family preservation, HIV/AIDS services, family support services, and after school programs for children and families living in Central Harlem, Washington Heights, Southeast Queens and Far Rockaway. Their guiding principle is to offer families a range of comprehensive, accessible, innovative and culturally sensitive services. The Harlem Dowling program at PS 161 has been running since 2000 and serves between 150 and 250 students. For more information on Harlem Dowling please see their website at:

The mission at P.S. 161 is to foster in all students the skills that assist them to become independent thinkers, problem-solvers and lifelong learners. The school provides an environment where children are an integral part of a community and hold themselves and each other to the highest standards of performance. The close-knit atmosphere permits each child, parent, and staff member to feel safe, recognized, and respected. For more information on PS 161 please see their NYC school portal at:
