Service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community.
Harlem Ivy service learning efforts are led by a team of Teachers College graduate students who work with K-5 students in the Harlem Ivy after-school programs leading student driven projects supporting and promoting academic learning. The Harlem Ivy Service Learning team works to develop lesson plans connected to the Common Core State Standards that support service projects chosen by K-5 throughout students.
Since incorporating a service learning component in 2009 Harlem Ivy students have participated in projects focusing on environmental stewardship, anti-bullying awareness, health and nutrition, animal rights, leadership, and homelessness. These projects have been connected to math and literacy standards. Upon culmination these projects are presented to after-school staff, students and invited guests at a semi-annual showcase in Teachers College's Cowin Center Auditorium.
