Hollingworth Preschool
Philosophy
The philosophy of Hollingworth Preschool is guided by the value we as educators place on children's sense of wonder; thus, we consider our approach child-responsive. This child-responsive philosophy guides our work and influences our goals as educators. Our goals include:
- Providing a warm, caring, responsive environment that fosters friendship, comfort with self and others, compassion, and community
- Supporting each child's growth intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically
- Encouraging each child's love of learning, and fostering positive attitudes towards school
- Respecting children's sense of wonder as we provide children with a conceptual knowledge of the world around them, serving as a foundation and support for the children's communal and individual inquiries
- Nurturing the development of creative thought and higher-order thinking skills vital to deep inquiry and exploration, with a focus on metacognitive thought
- Furthering the development of children's social experiences and working within a community of inquiry while responding to and respecting the individual needs of children within a community of learners
- Sharing our intentionality in all aspects of our work within the Hollingworth Community
To support these goals, our curricular approach is inter- disciplinary, striking a balance between child-selected/child- designed activities and teacher-developed/teacher-directed units of study. This combination affords each child the opportunity to explore individual interests while gaining exposure to a wide variety of ideas and perspectives. Thus, throughout our school year, the teachers and students will explore several topics of study as a community of learners and inquirers.
