Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is an area of clinical practice in Speech-Language Pathology which services individuals with severe communication disorders for whom gestural, speech and/or written communication is temporarily or permanently inadequate to meet their communicative needs. People who use or need to have access to AAC come from all age groups and present with either congenital or acquired impairments.
Comprehensive augmentative communication evaluations using low and high tech systems are provided for individuals with complex communication impairments. Indivduals are evaluated using a variety of techniques to determine an appropriate, individualized communication system. Particular attention is given to each individual's physical, cognitive and linguistic status. Assistance in obtaining recommended systems, adaptive equipment and funding (including Medicaid & Medicare) is provided.
Therapeutic intervention for individuals using either high or low-tech augmentative communication systems is provided. Training in the uses of their AAC systems is provided with particular focus on integrating use of AAC systems into natural environments, enhancing spontaneous use of systems and using AAC systems in social contexts. Parent/care-giver training is also available as needed.
