CD-ROM on Child Abuse and Disabilities
Since the 1980s, New YorkState's
Department of Social Services and its Children's Justice Task Force
program efforts have consistently identified children with disabilities
as a vulnerable population for child abuse in all of its forms.
As a result, it has supported a variety of training programs and in
June, 2004, provided support for the development of a CD-ROM on the
issues. This CD-ROM provides an overview of child abuse and
disabilities involving the reporting, investigation and intervention
strategies learned throughout New YorkState
through 2003. Its goal is the provision of information learned
about working more effectively with child abuse cases that may involve
these children and their families. It outlines basic information which
should be known by all members of the multidisciplinary team (i.e. law
enforcement, child protective, child advocacy personnel, etc.) related
to child characteristics, data gathering or "reasonable accommodations"
that may be needed in investigative and/or support procedures. It
also provides the current policies, federal/state guidelines,
sample case studies/interviews with a variety of experts from New YorkState,
along with web-based resources.
