Williams Syndrome Adaptation of the ESCAPE Curriculum

Linda Hickson, Ph.D and Ishita Khemka, Ph.D
Teachers College, Columbia University

This recent project, supported by the Williams Syndrome Association, in 2002-2004, adapted the ESCAPE Curriculum to the specific needs of women with Williams Syndrome. Research has suggested that people with Williams Syndrome may be particularly vulnerable to victimization due to some of the prominent characteristics often seen in individuals with this syndrome, particularly in regard to their outgoing, trusting approach to social interactions. The findings of this project indicated that project participants at the Berkshire Hills Music Academy who received ESCAPE-WS, the adapted version of the curriculum, increased their rate of active, prevention-focused decision making in hypothetical situations involving abuse.

Copies of the ESCAPE-WS curriculum, tailored to the needs of women with Williams Syndrome, are now available.
