2001 New Trends in International Education

Nicosia, Cyprus September, 2001

Hickson, L.. (September, 2001) Opportunities for Independence and Self-Determination for People with Disabilities.

This was a conference organized by Dr. Juliette Dickstein, a Fulbright Scholar, in collaboration with Ms. Janie Hayes, Bi-communal Coordinator for the American Embassy in Nicosia.

The purpose of this conference was to discuss issues of common concern to educators in the South, Greek-Cypriot Community and in the North, Turkish-Cypriot Community despite the inability of these two communities to move freely across heavily guarded, barbed wire "green-line" barriers that divide these two groups. The conference was presented, therefore, at two separate locations, one in the South and one in the North.

In addition to discussing historical, traditional, and progressive approaches to special education in the United States, Dr. Hickson introduced the two audiences to the work of the Center for Opportunities and Outcomes for People with Disabilities Educators from both communities expressed considerable interest in the ideas and issues presented with possibilities for future exchanges being discussed.
