Virtual Conversations across Visual Cultures:
Cultural Identity in Korean Computer-Mediated Art

Vital Conversations and Valuable Contributions

I am pleased to be able to welcome participants to the 2006 Conversations Across Cultures conference and exhibition. Each year the Art and Art Education Program invite educators, artists, historians, and cultural critics to Teachers College to explore issues and ideas that further our understanding of the distinctive qualities that bind our many cultures and communities. This year we are privileged to be able to welcome faculty and students from Seoul Women’s University from South Korea who will join us in conversations in person and across the virtual landscape. These collaborations are vital as they provide important opportunities for communities to come together to share insights that contribute to our understanding of common educational and cultural connections.

The theme of virtual conversations across visual cultures is especially relevant today as we seek inventive ways to re-imagine how education can respond to the rapid changes taking place across the globe. As a hub of inquiry, the University is central to this vision for it is a site where the creative intellect takes flight. Further, it is in the minds of those with the capacity to move beyond the boundaries of learning as we know it, and teaching as we see it, that the opportunity for thinking anew about present and future needs arise. In these circumstances tradition is not an object of the past, but an ever present and ever changing cultural motif; and technology is not a means to an end, but a digital space that challenges our habits of mind.

In their inventive way, artists explore new forms of thinking and seeing that re-animates the past and re-imagines the present using a visual language that cuts across cultural divides. The creative pursuits of the Korean artists displayed and discussed at this conference and exhibition are a graphic instance where traditional culture mixes with high-tech media culture and opens up opportunities to think differently about how we envision education. I am very pleased that Teachers College is able to host these conversations across cultures, which will be seen and heard by our colleagues and communities in New York and Seoul.

문화정체성

생생한 대화와 중요한 기여

2006년도 ‘문화를 통한 대화’ 학회 및 전시 참여자 여러분을 진심으로 환영합니다. 매년 저희 학교의 미술∙미술교육학과에서는 교육자, 작가, 역사학자, 문화비평가 등을 초대하여 다양한 이슈와 개념을 살펴봄으로써, 우리의 여러 문화와 지역사회를 통괄하는 중요한 가치들에 대한 이해를 돕고 있습니다.  올해는 특히 한국의 서울여자대학교의 교수진과 학생들을 이 행사에 초대하여 오프라인 및 온라인 공간에서 대화를 가질 수 있게 되어 큰 영광으로 생각합니다. 양 대학 간의 협력관계는 매우 중요한 것으로, 모두함께 모여 다양한 견해를 나눔으로써 우리의 교육적, 문화적 연계에 대한 이해를 도울 수 있기 때문입니다.

교육이 전세계에서 일어나고 있는 빠른 변화에 어떻게 부응할 수 있는가에 대해 재고하는 독창적인 방법을 찾으려는 현재의 우리에게 있어, ‘시각문화를 통한 가상의 대화’의 주제는 특히 적합합니다. 저희 학교는 창의적인 지식인들이 마음껏 뜻을 펼칠 수 있는 곳으로, 이러한 교육적 탐구과정의 중심적 역할을 하고 있습니다. 또한, 아는 만큼 배우고 보는 만큼 가르치는 것을 넘어서는, 즉 교육의 경계선을 넘나들 수 있는 이들을 위한 곳이며, 현재와 미래에 대해 새로운 것을 떠올릴 수 있는 기회가 생겨나는 곳입니다.  이러한 환경에서 전통은 과거의 산물 만이 아니고 항상 현재와 끊임없이 변화하는 문화의 자극에 반응할 수 있는 것이어야 합니다. 또한 테크놀로지는 결과 만을 위한 도구가 아니며, 디지털 환경은 우리에게 사고의 전환을 요구합니다.

독창적인 방법을 통해, 작가들은 과거를 재탄생시키고 현재를 새롭게 바라볼 수 있는 사고와 시각의 새로운 형태를 탐구하고, 이 과정에서 문화의 경계를 넘나드는 시각적 언어를 구사합니다. 본 학회와 전시를 통해 보여지고 토론될 한국 작가들의 창의적 추구는 전통문화가 하이테크 미디어문화와 교차하는 지점의 시각적 산물이며, 우리가 어떻게 교육을 바라볼 것인가에 대해 새롭게 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회를 열어줍니다. 저는 저희 컬럼비아대학교 사범대학이 뉴욕과 서울의 동료들과 지역사회를 통해 체험될 ‘문화를 통한 대화’ 행사를 개최할 수 있어 매우 기쁘게 생각함을 전하는 바입니다.
