Virtual Conversations across Visual Cultures:
Cultural Identity in Korean Computer-Mediated Art

On behalf of the faculty and students of Seoul Women’s University, I am excited about this meaningful collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University. I believe that the collaborative conference and exhibitions, focusing on Korean art and culture in relation to computer technology, will enhance our mutual understanding and awareness in innovative ways. At the conference, Professor Tai Ho Kim and Mr. Taejin Kim of the Fine Art Program at the university will give presentations, and the video works created by our students will be on view. In addition to the exhibition in New York, the Bahrom Gallery at our institution will present a concurrent exhibition featuring the computer-mediated artworks created by the students.

Our Fine Art Program has a history of over twenty years. Since its establishment, faculty members in the program have worked hard to offer a unique and authentic art experience to their students. In particular, the professors and instructors have integrated what students were learning in classes with what was happening in the real art world in order to prepare students for an ever-changing society. The offering of computer-mediated art courses is also part of this attempt. In this regard, I am pleased that the teachers will have an opportunity to share their insights about the teaching of art and culture with their colleagues at Teachers College. I am also happy for the students, who will present their creative artworks both in New York and Seoul. 

I am confident that this collaboration between Seoul Women’s University and Teachers College will provide an opportunity to enhance educational and artistic practices at both institutions. I am very pleased that our institution is taking part in the artistic and cultural conversations across the boundaries of nations and cultures. Especially, I want to express my gratitude to Professor Graeme Sullivan, who visited our university twice for this project, and his colleagues at Teaches College for this wonderful institutional collaboration.

시각문화를 통한 가상의 대화:
컴퓨터아트를 통해 보는 한국의
문화정체성

서울여자대학교의 교수진과 학생들을 대표하여, 컬럼비아대학교 사범대학과의 의미있는 협력관계에 대해 매우 기쁘게 생각함을 전합니다. 한국의 미술과 문화를 컴퓨터 테크놀로지와 연결하여 조명할 두 대학의 합동 학회/전시 행사가 새로운 방법을 통해 서로 간의 이해를 돕는 기회가 될 것임을 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 저희 대학 서양화과의 김태호 교수님과 김태진 선생님께서 뉴욕의 학회에 참석하시어 발표를 하실 것이며, 저희 학생들의 비디오 아트 작품들도 학회 중에 상영될 예정으로 알고 있습니다. 뉴욕 전시와 더불어 서울여대의 바롬갤러리에서 학생들의 컴퓨터 아트 전시를 개최할 것입니다.

서울여자대학교 서양화과는 이십년이 넘는 역사를 지니고 있습니다. 학과과 설립된 이래, 교수진은 독창적이고 고유한 미술교육을 하기 위해 열심히 노력해 왔습니다. 특히 이 학과의 교수님들과 강사선생님들께서는 끊임없이 변하는 이 사회에 학생들을 준비시키기 위해, 그들이 수업을 통해 배우는 것이 실제 미술세계에서 벌어지는 일들을 반영할 수 있도록 노력하셨습니다. 컴퓨터 아트 과목 수업도 이러한 노력의 일부라 생각됩니다. 이런 점에서, 저는 서양화과의 교수님들께서 미술과 문화의 교육에 대한 그들의 견해를 컬럼비아대학교 사범대학의 동료들과 나눌 수 있는 기회를 가지게 됨을 기쁘게 생각합니다. 또한 뉴욕과 서울에서 자신들의 창의적인 미술작품을 선보이게 될 학생들에 대해서도 기쁨과 격려를 전합니다.

이번 서울여자대학교와 컬럼비아대 사범대학 간의 협력행사가 양 대학의 교육적, 예술적 활동의 수준을 높일 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것임을 확신합니다. 또한 국가와 문화의 국경을 넘어서 펼쳐지는 미술과 문화에 대한 대화의 장에 저희 학교가 중요한 역할을 할 수 있음을 감사하게 생각합니다.  특히 이 행사를 위해 저희 학교에 두 번이나 직접 방문하신 그레엄 설리번 교수님과 동료교수진께 큰 감사를 드립니다.
