2) Gaemyoung Inn, single channel video, 2005
Gaemyoung” means enlightenment. Ironically, the nuance of this word is old-fashioned. The old woman has been running the “Gaemyoung Inn” for more than fifty years, since she was twenty-eight years old. She lost her husband and two sons in that time. Once this inn was flourishing, but at present it is a mere cipher, overlapping the old woman's senile body. Our lives are like this old inn, in which we lodge for a while.

한국의 공원 산책로는 흥미롭게도 한 방향으로만 걷는/경보하는 사람들로 채워져 있다. 공원 자체가 특정한 용도의 걷기를 권고하고 있다. 이것은 우리 사회가 제도화되는 하나의 양식일지도 모른다는 생각이 든다. 애초부터 다양성이 거세된 사람들과 규칙들의 상호작용일까?

‘개명’이란 enlightenment를 의미한다. 그러나 아이러니하게도 현대 한국어에서 이 단어는 구닥다리의 뉘앙스를 갖는다. 할머니는(82세) 28세부터 시작해서 지금까지 50년이 넘도록 개명여관을 운영해왔다. 그동안 남편, 두 아들과 사별하고 혼자 여관을 지키고 있다. 한때 성황이었던 이 여관은 할머니의 노쇄한 몸처럼 빈껍데기만 남은 듯하다. 우리의 인생도 이처럼 잠깐 묵었다 가는 여관과 같을 것이다.
