“My motivation for making artwork is to realize the history of art in terms of its limitations. I am equally concerned with the human condition and mankind’s attempts at achieving balance in life…One of the ways to depict these ideas into artwork is to draw objects using no color but a single pressed line on paper, a minimal gesture on a white page, so that the drawing can be seen or not according to the angle of light. The pressed line on paper embraces visual emergence and disappearance simultaneously with the angle of light. After making hundreds of these drawings, they are animated at 30 drawings per second. I start with an image that is then traced frame by frame. I go from video to drawing back to video. In this process, I endeavor to combine the main aspects of each of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th dimensions, as in painting, sculpture, video, and light to see other possible forms in the art.

This method allows me to transfer to objects the idea of existence and non-existence together at the same time, based on the idea of Buddhism and ‘the golden mean,’ one of the eastern philosophies. The definition of ‘the golden mean’ is a balance between two extreme positions, ideas, etc. I express this idea by depicting human interactions with other entities ? the most common thing between us ? within the details of everyday life. Therefore, I observe relationships between people and other people, people and objects, myself and the other.”

“나에게 비중 있는 작업의 동기는 미술사의 이론적인 발전단계 상에서 한계점을 인식하고 이를 동양사상의 하나인 공으로 극복하고자함과 동시에 인간의 여러 경향 중 하나인 ‘삶에서 균형을 찾고자 함’을 작품을 통해 숙고 하고자 함에 있다. 나의 이러한 관심사는 색을 사용하지 않고 종이에 손으로 선을 압인하여 드로잉을 제작하는 방식을 통하여 표현된다. 종이에 압인 되어진 선은 빛이 그 종이에 비추어지는 방향에 따라 가시성과 비가시성을 동시에 띄게된다. 나의 비디오작품은 이렇게 종이에 선을 압인 하여 제작한 드로잉들을 1초당 30장 씩 애니메이트시켜 동영상화 한 것이다. 비디오를 구성하는 각각의 프레임들을 압인드로잉으로 제작한 후 이 드로잉들이 다시 비디오의 프레임역할을 하여 재해석된 비디오로 돌아간다. 이러한 비디오 제작방식을 통하여 이차원, 삼차원, 사차원, 오차원의 특성들-회화, 조각, 비디오, 빛-을 조합하여 다른 형태를 만들어 내려 시도한다. 이는 또한 사물을 존재와 부재의 양면성을 동시에 포괄하는 또 다른 어떤 것으로 재해석하는 과정이며, 불교사상과 중용에서 관계를 찾을 수 있다. 즉, 내가 생각하는 공과 색의 교차점을 작품으로 시각화하는 과정이다.

나의 작업 개념은 평범한 일상의 행위가 어떤 존재와의 만남으로 인하여 관계가 형성 되고 그 전과 변화된 의미를 갖게되는 현상을 시각 화 함으로서 작품으로 시각화 될 수 있다. 그러므로 나는 사람과 사람의 관계, 사람과 사물의 관계, 그리고 나 자신과 다른 존재와의 관계를 응시한다”.
