II.                 This document intends to clarify how to log in to different systems (i.e. which username and password is appropriate in various contexts).  This document also suggests resources to use if there is a problem with logging in.

III.               Step by step instructions:

A.     Registering for classes: the Student Information System

                                                               i.      Students can access the Student Information System from the Teachers College homepage (click on MyTC at the top, select Student Information System).

ii.      In order to log in to the Student information system, the student should have a PIN assigned by their advisor or department which can be used as the password.  Thus, to log in to the student information system, enter social security number or TC ID as the username, and enter the PIN as the password.

iii.      If a student has problems logging in, he or she can refer to their department or advisor to confirm their PIN.

B.     Checking your email

                                                               i.      Teachers College provides each member of the TC community with an email account.  First-time users can activate their CUNIX account as follows: using the World Wide Web, go to Columbia's home page: http://www.columbia.edu and click on the "Computing and Email button".

ii.      On the Columbia Computing page, select “Manage Computer ID.”

iii.      On the AcIS Computer Account Maintenance page, select "ACTIVATE/Manage account". Then select: "AcIS Computer Account Maintenance for Current Faculty, Staff and Students". Finally, select: "Create/Activate a NEW Account" and answer the questions.

iv.      You will then be assigned a User ID, which is your initials followed by a number (e.g. gs56). This User ID followed by "@columbia.edu then becomes your email address (e.g. gs56@columbia.edu). In the event that the process fails, call the Academic Computing office at x3302.

                                                             v.      Once a user activates their account, he or she can log into CUNIX by entering their user ID as the username and creating a new password the first time they log in.  The CUNIX username and password will remain active until the user may change the password.

C.     Logging into Classweb

                                                               i.      Students may access Classweb by clicking on MyTC at the top of the TC homepage.

ii.      To log into Classweb, students should use their CUNIX usernames and passwords.

D.    Logging into a PC in an ACS student lab

                                                              i.      When you sit down at a PC, the screen should display a Windows 2000 or XP login screen.  If you are greeted by the desktop or an open application, that means that the last user did not log out.  In this case, strike Control-Alt-Delete and choose log out.

ii.      Strike Control-Alt-Delete to log in.  Enter your CUNIX user ID as the username, and enter your social security number or TC ID as the password.

iii.      If it is your first time logging in, please patiently wait a minute or two as the computer creates your local profile (this will allow you to set some preferences, configurations, etc.).
