Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has approved a renovation of the TCCS play area that will provide a state-of-the-art area for interactive and creative play and learning. Materials will be safe, durable and age-appropriate across the PreK-8 grade span.

This project, which is due to be completed in Fall 2013, will include:
  • A custom designed InterPlay play system
  • A poured-in-place safety surface with painted games for interactive play such as hopscotch
  • Wood bench seating on contoured, concrete, tiered platforms for an outdoor classroom space
  • Landscaping with trees, benches and labeled shrubs, to serve as quiet shaded areas for individuals or small groups to learn and relax
  • Planters for growing herbs and vegetables that support the school's nutrition program
  • A green wall on the NE perimeter wall that supports climbing plants and flowers
  • Freestanding basketball backstop in an open play area
  • A wrought iron steal fence around the entrance with aesthetic enhancements and a wrought iron gate to the street

As the school's partner in all aspects of its educational and community programs, Teachers College is contributing to the success of the project with:

  • Consultation with TC faculty in science education, heath education, physical fitness and nutrition
  • Curriculum design that incorporates the outdoor space as a natural learning laboratory
  • Student teachers, interns and volunteers to lead enriched educational and recreational programming in the play area for children and families
