Canvas at Teachers College

After a comprehensive selection process, Teachers College (TC) is moving to Canvas as our primary learning management system (LMS). Beginning in May of 2017, all TC courses are automatically using Canvas.

One of the exciting benefits of using Canvas is their excellent 24/7 support for the entire TC community. Faculty, students, and staff can call, live chat, or email Canvas. Once you logged into Canvas, click Help in the lower left to access any of these support options.

Canvas for Students

In addition to the Canvas 24/7 support, students can learn more about Canvas through CIS workshops, the comprehensive Canvas Student Guide, and a Canvas site that provides information about Canvas and other technology resources available to TC students.

It’s important to note that students will not have access to old Moodle courses after January 12, 2018, so they should download any old content during the fall 2017 semester.

How can faculty and course assistants learn to use Canvas?

  • Webinars, workshops, and open houses
  • Drop by sessions
    • Our Tech Fellows are in Macy 345 from 1:00 - 4:00, Monday - Thursday, no appointment necessary.

  • Departmental meeting
    • Our full time staff are available to visit your departmental meetings to introduce your faculty to Canvas.

  • Schedule an individual appointment
    • Any of our full time Academic Technology (AT) staff are happy to meet with you in your office, in our office, or via web conference at a time that's convenient for you. Email servicedesk@tc.columbia.edu to schedule an appointment.

Want to migrate a course from Moodle to Canvas?

We have instructions to guide you through copying your course content from Moodle to Canvas. AT is happy to assist with course migrations. To request assistance, please email the Service Desk at servicedesk@tc.columbia.edu and include your course name, number, and semester of the old course that you would liked migrated to Canvas.

 

Questions about your old courses in Moodle?

The Moodle server will be available until January 12, 2018. Due to security concerns (as Moodle will no longer be patched), the server will no longer be available on the Internet after this date.  We do expect to keep a local copy of Moodle, so an instructor can make a request from us to have a course retrieved.  

Thinking ahead?

Faculty would be best served to request that any material they might need be migrated from Moodle to Canvas during the fall 2017 semester while Moodle is still on the server.  AT can create “sandboxes” in Canvas for any course, which can then be migrated to actual courses when needed.  

Still need to migrate from Blackboard?

Blackboard is no longer available at TC. Archive copies were made of the most recent Blackboard courses. If you would like an archived version of your Blackboard course moved into Canvas, please email servicedesk@tc.columbia.edu and include the name, number, and semester of the course.
