Recent discoveries and research in neuroscience, learning theory, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and the inner dimensions of teaching and learning invite us to integrate all of these aspects into k-12 classrooms by educating the “whole child”.

Course Description:
Recent discoveries and research in neuroscience, learning theory, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and the inner dimensions of teaching and learning invite us to integrate all of these aspects into k-12 classrooms by educating the “whole child”. The science and application of educating the “whole child” also includes cultivating the spiritual dimension of teaching and learning. This course will explore how SEL, contemplative education and mindfulness can be successfully integrated into the k-12 school setting. The components and strategies of successful implementation will be discussed. We will explore how educators can cultivate a balance between their own inner lives and their outer lives of service and action in the classroom. In today’s schools where both educators and children are overloaded and overwhelmed, the practicum portion of this course will provide participants with a living example of how teachers, administrators and children are paying attention to all aspects of who they are, including their inner lives - despite the reality of fewer resources and greater pressure to “teach to the test”.
