Consortium for Policy Research in Education
Teachers College joined the Consortium for Policy Research in Education in 2007, a group dedicated to improving elementary and secondary education through research and development of research-based tools for practitioners. CPRE-TC researchers made their mark studying the effectiveness of federal, state, and local policies, with particular emphasis on accountability systems, school finance, teacher quality initiatives, assessment systems, and school governance. Over time, CPRE-TC’s work has shifted from studies of policy implementation to studies of instructional change and effectiveness.
Currently, CPRE-TC’s primary goal is to bridge the gap between research and practice by making research more accessible and usable, by designing tools and professional development experiences that are based on research evidence, and by getting researchers to focus on the core problems of practice.
CPRE-TC focuses on research and development of tools, processes, and policies intended to promote the continuous improvement of instructional practice locally, nationally and across the globe. Our focus is on fostering the use of adaptive instruction and other high-impact practices that have been shown to produce learning gains across cultures.
CPRE-TC’s work is anchored in these core principles:
- The use of evidence-based practices and connecting teachers with research literature.
- The use of local or national curricula, as appropriate, as a basis for professional development, focused on the content teachers find most problematic.
- A respect for teachers as professionals that recognizes the difficulty and uncertainty of their work.
- An insistence that educators’ participation be voluntary.
- Working with practitioners over time to support transfer of knowledge and skill and implementation and adaptation.
- Recruitment of strong instructional partners, experienced at working with teachers.
- Building local capacity through collaboration and designing and conducting training that is gradually handed off to the local partner.
