Tisch Lecturer

Teachers College is proud to welcome Helen Clark as the Tisch Distinguished Lecturer for the 2011-2012 academic year.

 

Helen Clark is the Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as well as the Chair of the United Nations Development Group. Prior to her appointment with UNDP she served for nine years as the Prime Minister of New Zealand. As Prime Minister she and her government prioritized reconciliation and the settlement of historical grievances with New Zealand's indigenous people and the development of an inclusive multicultural and multi-faith society.

 

Former Minister Clark advocated strongly for New Zealand's comprehensive program on sustainability and for tackling the problems of climate change and helped to position New Zealand among the world's leading nations in dealing with these challenges. She was also a member of the Council of Women World Leaders, an international network of current and former women leaders whose mission is to mobile the highest-level women leaders globally for collective action on issues of critical important to women and equitable development.

 

Ms Clark has officially served the people of New Zealand for over thirty years and was first elected to Parliament in 1981. As and MP her primary responsibilities were in Conservation and Housing, Health and Labour. Prior to entering New Zealand politics, Ms Clark taught in the Political Studies Department of the university of Auckland.

The Teachers College community is invited to attend her lecture, titled "Education and International Development," at 4:00 pm on Monday, March 26, in Milbank Chapel.

Lecturer Background

The Distinguished Tisch Lecture, made possible by the generosity of Laurie M. Tisch, aims to support a visiting lecturer speaking about a topic considered important to the future of education in the broadest sense.

Laurie M. Tisch is the founder of the Tisch Foundation, which supports the arts, art in education, educational reform, and efforts to improve the quality of life in New York City.  Ms. Tisch is Vice Chair of the Teachers College Board of Trustees.

The Tisch Lecture began in Academic Year 2000-2001 with Dr. Bernard R. Gifford serving as the inaugural lecturer.
