Racial Literacy Roundtable Discussion

Racial Literacy Roundtables (RLR) seek to foster open dialogue about race, issues pertaining to race, language differences, sexual orientation, and other important issues in Urban Education, primarily among in-service and pre-service teachers and members of the TC community. Conceptualized as a peer-to-peer forum, RLRs hope to bring together students and faculty across departments to discuss the different topics. A light snack and refreshments will be served.

Increasing workloads, deadlines, fast‐changing and complex relationships are the some of the major challenges of today's working life! Without effective tools to deal with the daily pressures, we can succumb mental and emotional imbalance, resulting in frustration, distraction and ill health. It is possible to handle these challenges with clarity, effectiveness and a calm positive mental attitude. Cultivating mindful present awareness is the solution. Mindfulness meditation is a mind-body practice that involves focusing your mind on the present, to be aware of your thoughts and actions without judgment. Research has shown that the practice of mindfulness can have many benefits, including enhancing clarity, concentration, mood, sleep, and immune function, in addition to reducing stress.
This series introduces participants to the basic theory and practicalities of mindfulness. It provides a community of support for participants to share insight and process the experience. A commitment to a daily personal practice is necessary to build longer‐term stability, resiliency and self‐awareness.

Your presence is requested at the 8th Annual Black History Gala to be held in the Grace Dodge Dining Hall on the historic campus of Teachers College, Columbia University. The Gala exemplifies the purpose of The Black Student Network at Teachers College by acknowledging and honoring the accomplishments of fellow African Americans and people of African descent. This semi-formal gathering provides the opportunity to build and nurture links and partnerships with the community at large, as it grants our students the opportunity to network with local community and civic leaders. At the Gala, we are all united under the most honorable objective of celebrating the unsung heroes within the Harlem and the Columbia University communities. Annual awards are given to faculty/staff, students, and community leaders for their contributions to the ideals of organization and Black community. Dress is semi-formal.

This film chronicles the dramatic stories of three gay workers over the course of five years: Cheryl Summerville, Detroit Auto Worker, Ron Woods, and New York Public Library Clerk, Nat Keitt. It follows them at home, at work, and through their collective fight to secure workplace safely, job security, and employee benefits for gay and lesbian workers.

Dr. Mshelia is the author of five books including ARABA LET'S SEPARATE: The Story of the Nigerian Civil War; SUKSUKU: Stories and Folktales of the Burrah People of Northeastern Nigeria; The Village Boy; Cognition, Culture and Field Dependence-Independence; and Depth Pictorial Perception, Culture and Psychological Differentiation. The Lives of Transgender People
Presented by Professor and Author, Dr. Susan Rankin

Dr. Rankin's Lecture will focus on
• The complexity of gender identity, including intersecting identities - mainly focusing on students
• The obstacles that trans and gender non-conforming students face on college campuses
• The best practices / approaches to address these obstacles
• How we build a gender-inclusive campus in a gender-binary society
Dr. Susan (Sue) Rankin is author (with Dr. Genny Beemyn) of The Lives of Transgender People. She is an associate professor at The Pennsylvania State University and a senior research associate at the Center for the Study of Higher Education. She has presented and published widely on the impact of sexism, racism, genderism, and heterosexism in the academy and intercollegiate athletics. Her recent publications include the 2010 State of Higher Education for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People and Our Place on Campus: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Services and Programs in Higher Education.

The Black Student Network 4th Annual Diversity in Research & Practice Conference
The Teachers College, Columbia University Black Student Network (BSN) and the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) invite you to join us at the 4th Annual Diversity in Research & Practice Conference (DiRP). DiRP seeks to influence the progression of diversity in education research and practice by assembling students, scholars, and community leaders concerned with critical issues in education.
The 2013 conference theme “Changing the Game: Expanding Discourses in Research” is representative of the changing landscape in education research and practice. More specifically, this year’s conference theme will provide a space and the contexts to expand the existing discourses about the research on and practices within our schools and communities.This year’s conference will challenge participants to think about innovate ways to advocate for and promote students and scholars who are “game changers” in their respective areas.

ALAS 11th Annual Conference – Education Across the Americas: Impacting Society through Philosophy and Education

ALAS is very proud to boast that The Education Across the Americas conference is one of the only conferences in the Americas where scholars working on educational issues in Latin America and the Caribbean come together to share research, build collaborative relationships, and develop new critical conversations about questions concerning education in and across these regions. Additionally, this conference brings together scholars, students, teachers, and activists working in urban education and education concerning Latino/as and/or other immigrant communities in the United States. The Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) at Teachers College is an organization of students from diverse countries of Latin America that was formed 11 years ago and has since reached out to include members from all nationalities that are interested in topics related to Latin America. Since conception, our aim has been to create an academic, cultural, and social network within the Latin American community at Teachers College.

Envision Yourselves Latinos: Striving for Graduate School Access and Affordability – A free workshop on applying and getting into graduate school.
Envision Yourself is an annual event bringing together college students, Teachers College and Columbia University students, as well as faculty and staff to create open lines of communication among students of different socioeconomic, geographic, educational, and cultural backgrounds specifically to create pathways to graduate school. An outreach program for traditionally marginalized students in community, city and state colleges in New York City and surrounding areas, Envision welcomes guests from other colleges. The panelists include students and faculty, chosen on the basis of excellence in academic achievement, involvement, and transition so as to serve as role models. The program is specifically designed for first-generation college students, to encourage high aspirations for higher education, thus enabling participants to envision themselves in college and as professionals. Organized in conjunction with the Offices of Admission, Financial Aid, Vice President’s Office for Diversity and Community Affairs, Office of Student Activities and Programs, and TC faculty and administrators.
