DCI Grant Description & Application 2013-2014
The Vice President’s Grant for Diversity and Community Initiatives (DCI) is available to all recognized Teachers College organizations and community members. The Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs strives to reinforce the values of diversity, community and civility and to support initiatives that will continue to bring the institution together, create opportunities to build healthy working relationships, and enhance and improve academic and work life and culture. Thus the DCI Grant provides financial support for projects, programs, and events that benefit the entire TC community with the goal of supporting new and innovative ideas. As such, the Grant promotes interactive, inter-group communication, as well as collaborative and educational activities with an emphasis on community and/or diversity. While the DCI Grant prefers supporting new and original programs, applications are welcomed from organizations, individuals, and groups that have hosted past activities or events and seek to build upon them by expanding or enhancing their initiatives. The Call for Proposals for Academic Year 2013-2014 is inviting initiatives that reach out to the surrounding Morningside Heights and Harlem community with an emphasis social justice concerns.
The maximum DCI Grant award is $1,500 per application. In 2008-2009, 13 proposals were awarded with disbursements totaling $15,433, in 2009-2010, 11 proposals were awarded with disbursements totaling $14,300, in 2010-2011, 18 proposals were awarded with disbursements totaling $15,870, in 2011-2012, 12 grants were disbursed awarding $13,500, and last year (2012-2013), grants were disbursed awarding $11,450 to nine great initiatives!
The submitted proposal should clearly itemize each expense in exact dollar amounts (including items such as supplies, publicity for the event, food, etc.), as well as any other resources from co-sponsorship expected. The proposed budget for the proposal can exceed $1,500, however only an amount up to $1,500 of the budget will be funded by the DCI Grant award. (Travel to conferences will not be funded.)
All Teachers College Community members, including currently enrolled students (through Spring 2014), faculty, and staff members, are encouraged to apply! Become active leaders and participants in community programs --- actively promote community, civility and the development of relationships and connections with members of other constituencies. Grants will not be awarded to individual students. Students must work in collaboration with an academic department, student organization, or other TC unit.
All Grant proposals will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the President’s Committee on Community and Diversity. The activity or event must take place during the 2013-2014 academic year. If for some reason the event cannot be held during this time, the grantee must submit a written request for an extension to the Committee on Community and Diversity. The CCD reserves the right to grant permission for postponement or to revoke the grant; this will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
For student applicants, the submitted application must provide an ACCOUNT and INDEX NUMBER to enable receipt of the grant. This information can be obtained by contacting Yvonne Destin in the Office of Student Activities and Programs (212.678.3690). Others should contact their departments to obtain this information. Failure to provide the ACCOUNT and INDEX NUMBERS will disqualify the proposal from consideration.
The disbursement of Grant funds WILL REQUIRE that two group members attend a meeting with the staff of the Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs to sign an award letter and review the Grant requirements.
It is strongly recommended that you begin planning your event prior to submitting your Grant application; for example, please manage necessary details such as confirming guest speakers, room reservations (www.tc.columbia.edu/administration/room-assignments/), setting an alternative date for the event, etc. Also, please include sufficient funding to publicize the event when planning the budget.
If for any reason an event date is changed or any other mishaps occur, please contact Lenore Karo (212.678.3391) in the Vice President’s Office for Diversity and Community Affairs immediately when the change is made!
The deadline to submit all proposals is 12:00 noon on Thursday, October 17, 2013. No late or incomplete proposals will be accepted. The DCI Grant Awards will be announced on or before November 11, 2013.

The deadline for submission of this grant is Thursday, October 17th at 12:00 noon. In addition, please SUBMIT TEN (10) HARD COPIES of your proposal application to the Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs in 128 Zankel Hall.
