Division for Early Childhood 33rd Annual International Conference on Young Children with Special Needs (October 4 - 6, 2017)

Drs. Carol Hammer and Brook Sawyer had two presentations at the Division for Early Childhood's (DEC) 33rd Annual International Conference on Young Children with Special Needs and Their Families in Portland, Oregon on October 4 – 6, 2017.

In their first session, “Teaching Parents how to Promote Children’s Language Development through Focused Stimulation”, Drs. Hammer and Sawyer discuss how to educate practitioners on how to teach parents to use focused stimulation (FS), an evidenced-based strategy to promote the language development of young children with language impairment. The session will provide parent-friendly explanations of FS, show videotape examples of FS, and discuss how to embed FS in parents’ preferred activities/routines.

For the second session, “Engaging Stakeholders to Develop a Feasible Language-Focused Intervention for Parents” will show their poster that describes the development of Parents Plus: Language Coach (P+), an intervention to teach parents of preschool children with language impairment to use evidenced-based language strategies. It will also include how parents, speech-language pathologists and early childhood teachers were engaged in its development.

 

2017 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Conference (November 9 - 11, 2017)

Dr. Carol Scheffner Hammer will have several presentations at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) this November 9 – 11, 2017 held in Los Angeles, California.  

On Thursday, November 9, 2017, Dr. Hammer will be part of an information session for prospective doctoral students, “Thinking about a Ph.D? Then on Friday, November 10, 2017, Dr. Hammer,  together with lab alum Dr. Lauren Cycyk and members of the BWG network, will present their paper on “Review of language-promoting interventions for young children and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds”. On Saturday, November 11, 2017, Dr. Hammer and lab alum Dr. Shelley Scarpino will be presenting their poster entitled “Mastery of English Fricatives & Affricates by Spanish-English Speaking Dual Language Learners”
