Student Opportunities

Internships

During the 2006-2007 academic year, TC's Office of Policy and Research launched an exciting new internship program--TC Policy Connections--that links current TC policy and international students with internship opportunities in leading policy-related organizations.

Designed to benefit both TC students and the public, private, and non-profit organizations by providing students them with "real world" understanding of educational policy, the goals of TC Policy Connections are:

  1. To provide TC policy students with authentic and professional policy experiences while they engage in their studies.
  2. To create stronger connections between TC and policy organizations and professionals, thereby bridging the gap between research and practice in educational policy.
  3. To provide advocacy, activist, and policy organizations with valuable assistance in formulating, enacting, implementing, and researching/evaluating public policies in the field of education.

Fellowships

To support policy study at Teachers College, the Office of Policy and Research sponsors annual fellowships for students whose studies and dissertations are likely to advance the construction of sound social policy.

The OPR annually awards twelve fellowships in support of policy-related doctoral work. The fellowships are awarded in two categories--eight to current doctoral students, and four to incoming doctoral candidates. All decisions are made by the Policy Advisory Committee, which seeks to achieve diversity of background, department, interest, and experience in the pool of selected candidates.

Policy Student Network

At Teachers College, the study of policy extends far beyond the classroom. Graduate students from across the College and Columbia University have organized a forum, the Policy Student Network (PSN), for sharing their academic and professional interests and organizing events that enrich their education.

The Policy Student Network plays three important roles in the policy experience at Teachers College:

  1. It provides a vehicle for the exchange of information and ideas among policy students from diverse disciplines, programs, and schools;
  2. It provides opportunities for students to actively shape policy-related activities
  3. It provides opportunities for faculty-student discourse around policy issues of importance to the Columbia community.
