Sarah Cohodes, et al, letter to the NYT editor, May 30

Sarah Cohodes, together with Carolyn Sattin-Bajaj, Sean Corcoran, and Jennifer Jennings, responded to the NYT editorial from May 15 “Segregation in New York Schools.” 

Their years of academic research on high school admissions, working with hundreds of New York City middle schools and tens of thousands of eighth graders provides evidence that the low-cost informational tools can promote a level playing field by helping families navigate a complex school-choice market and enroll in higher performing schools.

Their work in New York City suggests that there are many opportunities to reduce complexity and better support disadvantaged families. While these steps alone cannot compensate for gaps that emerge long before high school, they can promote more equal access to the increasing number of high-quality public schools the city has to offer.
