Identifying those critical factors that enable a speech-language pathologist to distinguish a speech and language difference from a disorder. Particular focus is on children and adolescents from homes with linguistic and sociolinguistic differences from those expected in schools in this country. This includes children who come from homes where a language other than English or a dialect other than Mainstream American English is spoken. Her work also involves an analysis of the impact of language socialization practices on the outcome of an assessment where there are cultural and linguistic biases due to these sociolinguistic factors.
Recently involved in establishing a program for speech-language pathology in Bolivia and in bringing graduate students to other countries for class focusing on language, culture, and education/special education of that country. Supervisors with ASHA CCC's provide in-country supervision at placement sites.
