Scholarly Interests

James F. Sumowski, Ph.D. is a Research Scientist in the Neuropsychology & Neuroscience Laboratory of the Kessler Foundation Research Center in West Orange, New Jersey. His current research examines patterns of neuropsychological functioning and functional neuroimaging (fMRI) in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), with a specific interest in how cognition and cerebral activity are influenced by cognitive reserve. Dr. Sumowski has demonstrated that lifetime intellectual enrichment (estimated with vocabulary knowledge) helps to protect persons with MS from disease-related cognitive deficits and cerebral inefficiency. In a separate line of research on cognitive rehabilitation, Dr. Sumowski conducts translational research applying memory phenomenon from the cognitive psychology literature to improve memory functioning among persons with neurologically-based memory impairment.
