National Task Force Chaired by TC's Kagan Issues New Recommendations on Pre-K Policy

The National Early Childhood Accountability Task Force has released its final report and recommendations for developing a comprehensive assessment system to improve the performance of early education programs. Over the past four years, states have invested more than $1.9 billion in preschool to improve outcomes for children, but few have implemented a comprehensive effort for assessing and improving performance to ensure that early education returns intended results.

Getting Better All the Time

Teachers College "has always been an incredibly policy-rich environment," says Sharon Lynn Kagan, who was named TC's first Associate Dean for Policy and head of the newly created Office of Policy and Research (OPR) in 2004. The End of an Era

Arthur Levine had much to report in his annual State of the College address on September 14, but he saved the biggest news for last: he will step down as the Colleges President on July 1, 2006. His departure will cap a 12-year run during which the College tripled its endowment; refurbished and rehabilitated its physical plant; reorganized its academic departments and strengthened its faculty and Board of Trustees; conducted the largest capital campaign ever undertaken by a graduate school of education; and adopted a new mission focused on educational equity.

2004 at TC: The Year in Review

It was a year when the College rolled out a new mission, took steps to position itself as a leading education policy center, made dramatic improvements in student life, launched or enhanced major programs to support working teachers and principals, and strengthened its outreach to New York City, the nation and the world.

The Next Big Thing

Sharon Lynn Kagan is the Virginia and Leonard Marx Professor of Early Childhood and Family Policy and Co-Director of the National Center for Children and Families at Teachers College, Columbia University. Recognized internationally for her work related to the care and education of young children and their families, Kagan has helped define school readiness, the early childhood system, dimensions of collaboration, and leadership in early care and education.

Another successful run for the Federal Policy Institute course with Prof. Sharon Lynn Kagan

EPSA course, Federal Policy Institute EDPA 4899, offered during fall semesters and led by Professor Sharon Lynn Kagan, has had another successful run. It continued into January 2015, when students had a rare week-long opportunity to work with education policy experts in Washington D.C. The course will finish in February with students presentations.
