Newly Admitted Students » Receiving Your Loans


Federal Loans Are Disbursed When A Student Meets The Following Criteria:
___ has been accepted in a degree program;
___ has registered for at least half-time status each semester;
___ has completed a loan authorization form;
___ has completed their entrance interview(s); and
___ has completed verification of income and residency, if required; and
___ has a master promissory note on file with their loan guarantor.


In Order To Successfully Receive Your Federal STAFFORD Loans:

 

New STAFFORD Loan Borrowers At TC Must:

1. Complete the Loan Authorization Form and return it to the Office of Financial Aid.
 
2. Complete their Stafford entrance interview at www.mappingyourfuture.org
 

3. Complete your Stafford Electronic Master Promissory Note (E-MPN) with the loan program you have selected:

  • FFELP Loan borrowers may complete this requirement at www.hesc.com
    • Click on “Students, Families, and Counselors” and then “Complete the E-MPN”.
    • You will need a HESC PIN number to sign your E-MPN.
  • Direct Loan borrowers may complete this requirement at https://dlenote.ed.gov/empn/index.jsp
  • Be sure to select the same lender you indicated on your Loan Authorization Form.

4. The status of your Stafford entrance interview and E-MPN requirements can be found on the TC Student Information System, under “Student Requirements”; Loans will not be disbursed until your requirements are satisfied and fully processed.

 
 

In Order To Successfully Receive Your Federal GRADUATE PLUS Loans:

For New PLUS FFELP Borrowers:
1. After you have  selected a lender from the Loan Lender List, visit https://web1.hesc.org/hescpub/main?target=renderer_plusgb_empn&select=0 to apply.

2. Follow the steps to complete the pre-approval for the Graduate PLUS Loan. 

3. If you are approved, you will be directed to complete the Electronic Master Promissory Note (E-MPN).
 
4. Complete a Graduate PLUS Loan Counseling interview at http://mappingyourfuture.org/oslc/counseling/index.cfm?act=Intro&OslcTypeID=24 (Beginning July 1, 2008, all students are required to complete an entrance interview for a Graduate PLUS Loan).

The status of your Graduate PLUS entrance interview and E-MPN requirements can be found on the TC Student Information System, under “Student Requirements”; Loans will not be disbursed until your requirements are satisfied and fully processed.
 
For New PLUS DIRECT Borrowers:
1. Please complete the Direct PLUS Loan Application (http://www.tc.columbia.edu/i/a/document/7525_DirectPlusAppl.pdf). All sections of this application must be completed!

2. Once completed, please fax or mail the form directly to us for processing.

3. All Direct PLUS loan borrowers must complete an Electronic Master Promissory Note (E-MPN). To complete your E-MPN, please click https://dlenote.ed.gov/empn/index.jsp

4. Complete a Graduate PLUS Loan Counseling interview at http://mappingyourfuture.org/oslc/counseling/index.cfm?act=Intro&OslcTypeID=24 (Beginning July 1, 2008, all students are required to complete an entrance interview for a Graduate PLUS loan).
