in Applied Physiology offer a joint course of study leading to a 48 to 53-point Master of Science degree in Applied Physiology and Nutrition (APN). In addition to the core courses in nutrition, students are required to take a core of courses in applied physiology (see section below on APN for more details). The program prepares students to provide individual counseling and group education in nutrition and exercise and to design and implement exercise and nutrition programs in weight control centers, work sites, fitness centers, health centers, community centers, and hospitals.

Additional Degree Information

The master's degree in Nutrition and Applied Physiology is based on the premise that nutrition and exercise play interrelated roles in the promotion of health, the prevention and management of disease, and the enhancement of athletic performance.  The program provides the full education needed to become both a nutritionist and an exercise physiologist for those wishing to design and implement exercise and nutrition programs.  This master's degree provides a thorough grounding in both nutrition science and exercise science as well as training in use of appropriate educational and behavioral theories and strategies for the promotion of health-enhancing lifestyles including nutrition and physical activity.

Students who pursue this M.S. degree are eligible to apply to the Dietetic Internship Program (to become a registered dietitian) following completion of partial coursework for the M.S. and completion of other academic prerequisites.

Additional Professional Certifications

Here are the courses required for the master's degree in Nutrition and Applied Physiology, plus those required to be eligible to apply to our Dietetic Internship Program to become a registered dietitian.
