Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing at Teachers College, Columbia University is one of the oldest teacher education programs in the country.  It provides an intensive study of the educational issues of individuals who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing from the perspectives of psychology, anthropology, linguistics, child development, pedagogy and regular education with the aim of preparing teachers who will address the educational and literacy needs of these youngsters.  We serve and prepare individuals for work with children who possess a wide range of hearing losses in classes using diverse communication systems. 

We offer these Masters program options: 

1) combined 60 credit EdM/MA (MA en passant) degree that leads to certification as a teacher of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing as well as a teacher of regular education at a particular age range or content domain (Admission to regular ed programs is dependant upon individual program requirements and subject to program’s approval).

2) combined 60 credit EdM/MA (MA en passant) degree that leads to certification as a teacher of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing, N-12, primarily for those interested in working as an itinerant teacher. 

All programs also lead to Council on Education of the Deaf (CED), Type A, certification, which is a national professional certification.

Currently, New York State and consequently Teachers College has reciprocity agreements with 37 different states, the District of Columbia and the territory of Guam.  Currently eight states require that teachers be dually certified in regular elementary education as well as the education of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing and there may be more in the future.

We offer these Doctoral programs:

There are two possible doctoral degrees available: the Ed.D. and the Ph.D.  The Ed.D. and Ph.D. doctoral programs are divided into several areas of study including: 1) advanced study in general special education, 2) advanced study in a minimum of two paradigms of research, 3) advanced study in the education of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing, 4) advanced study in linguistics, psycholinguistics, and developmental psycholinguistics and 5) a professional specialization.
