Program Standards

All students in the Program are expected to be familiar with and comply with the general regulations of Teachers College which are found in the College catalogue. In addition, students are expected to remain in good standing. A student is in good standing who:

A. Maintains the appropriate level of grades in courses:

  • to be admitted to practica, a student must receive the grade of B or better in HBSK 4072
  • receive the grade of B+ or better in each practicum. Students who are unable to complete all required practicums will not be recommended by TC for State Certification as a Teacher of Literacy.
  • maintain a composite grade average of at least a B

B. Completes coursework in a timely manner:

  • incompletes are inappropriate, except under extraordinary circumstances
  • an incomplete in prerequisite coursework is resolved before admission is possible to successive courses
  • if two incompletes appear on a record, these need to be resolved before registration is permitted in further coursework
  • complete the program in a maximum of 3 academic years (most should complete the program in 2 academic years plus 2 summers)

C. Follows principles of ethical and professional conduct which include:

  1. Meeting responsibilities and deadlines in a timely manner.

    Students are expected to fulfill class requirements on time, to demonstrate a good attendance record in all classes, and to submit reports and materials on clients within the deadlines set by course instructors or supervisors. In addition, students are expected to keep their clients folders up-to-date and to keep supervisors informed about unusual occurrences or situations.

  2. Respect clients' confidentiality.

    All documentation, reports, and letters regarding clients are strictly confidential. This information is to be shared only with Teachers College staff members associated with the Center for Educational and Psychological Services, program faculty, and certain school personnel. Care must be taken not to discuss clients in public areas (such as elevators and the cafeteria) where discussions may be overheard. You may talk about what you are doing, but do not divulge your client's name (identity) to anyone who is not involved with the case.

  3. Engage in respectful collegial interactions.

    Your fellow students, the faculty, and all the college staff members should be seen as colleagues, deserving your respect.

  4.  Work with other students and faculty regardless of personal attitude.

    Students are expected to work with each other, with supervisors, and with the faculty at a professional level, fulfilling obligations in an objective and cooperative manner.

  5. Share knowledge and skills with other students.

    Students are here to learn and are among the most valuable teachers available to other students. Your knowledge and information should be exchanged with generosity.
