Lab School

Selecting a school for their child’s early education is one of the most important decisions parents make on behalf of their children. A lab school offers a unique early educational experience for families, an opportunity to be immersed in the weaving of theory and practice and the joy of lifelong learning.

Situated on a university campus, research and theory is central to our work. John Dewey’s notions of experience, Lev Vygotsky’s concepts of challenge and zone of proximal development, and Howard Gardner’s theories of multiple intelligences inform our pedagogical practices and daily work with the children. Inspired by the contemporary educational philosopher and former Teachers College Professor Emerita Maxine Greene, we also believe in the importance of inviting the passions of the teachers into the curriculum.

A child responsive program, we firmly believe in the interconnectedness of theory and practice, embodied by lifelong learning. Our educators engage in professional development opportunities both on and off site, collaborating with other cultural institutions and educational organizations.

Hollingworth Preschool is a demonstration program at Teachers College, actively involved in the research and dissemination of innovative, child-responsive pedagogy. The leadership team shares the work of Hollingworth Preschool at local, national, and international conferences. Hollingworth Preschool hosts many visitors throughout the school year, including Teachers College graduate students, local, national and international educators and administrators.
