The Double Helix of Education and the Economy

In this seminal work, the past and present directors of IEE analyzed the relationship between changes in the economy and the need for a fundamental rethinking of our educational system. This work has been influential in spreading the concept of "student-centered" education, and is widely used at professional development conferences and in courses in schools of education.

The Double Helix of Education and the Economy illuminates the complementarity between the changing workplace and effective learning:

• Changes in the workplace are gradually rendering education as traditionally delivered more and more unconnected to what its graduates need to know and how they need to perform at work.
• Schools from K-12 to corporate training often fail to apply what is now known about how people learn most effectively.
• Strengthening the educational system so that it conforms to the ways that people learn best will also directly enhance its ability to prepare students for the transformed workplace.
