How to Apply

All applications and supplemental materials should be submitted to the attention of the program manager, Blessing Nuga, at nuga@tc.columbia.edu. Kindly include: "Visiting Scholar Application" in the subject of the email.


Initial Visiting Scholar Application (Non-J1 visa)

If you are a FIRST-TIME applicant, please complete and submit the following as PDF attachments:

  1. ApplicationVS Application - April 2017VS Application (Digital) - October 2017
  2. Plan of research and/or activities at Teachers College (TC) including your goals and objectives
  3. A curriculum vitae (CV)
  4. SIGNED recommendation letter from your TC faculty host(s) stating the period of visit, the goals and objectives for the visit and detailing any funding, if applicable
  5. Copy of the passport identity and expiration page
  6. Nonrefundable one-time administrative fee of USD$400* (please see details below)

Initial Visiting Scholar Application (J-1 visa)

If you are a FIRST-TIME J-1 visa applicant, please complete and submit the following as PDF attachments:

  1. Application: VS Application - April 2017VS Application (Digital) - October 2017
  2. Plan of research and/or activities at Teachers College (TC) including your goals and objectives
  3. A curriculum vitae (CV)
  4. SIGNED recommendation letter from your TC faculty host(s) stating the period of visit, the goals and objectives for the visit and detailing any funding, if applicable
  5. Copy of the passport identity and expiration page
  6. Proof of English language proficiency (for applicants requesting TC J-1 visa sponsporship only)
  7. Nonrefundable one-time administrative fee of USD$400* (please see details below)
  8. If approved as a Visiting Scholar, please complete either the Visiting Scholar Form DS-2019 Application and submit to the Office of International Services

English Language Proficiency (for applicants requesting TC J-1 visa sponsorship only)

A new provision of the Department of State Federal Register [79 FR 60294, 60301] (dated October 6, 2014), requires sponsors of J-1 visas to use "objective measurements of English language proficiency" to determine an applicant's language ability.

In compliance with Federal law, Teachers College requires submission of ONE of the following language measures:

  1. Official scores from an English language test (TOEFL – minimum score of 100 or IELTS – minimum score of 7.0) --OR--
  2. Transcript from an English-speaking institution or English language school that you have attended --OR--
  3. Documented person-to-person interview with your TC faculty host confirming your English language proficiency

Continuing Scholar

If you are applying for an extension to your current stay, please complete and submit the folliowing:

  1. Application: VS Extension Application 2017VS Extension Application (Digital) 2017
  2. SIGNED support letter from your faculty host(s) stating the purpose of extension, new date of completion and anticipated research outcome
  3. Nonrefundable one-time renewal fee of USD$100 (please see details below)

Note: ONE, 1-year renewal may be requested. The application must be received at least TWO MONTHS prior to the termination date of Visiting Scholar status. Please check with the Office of International Services for J1 status extension eligibility.

Please allow up to 2-3 weeks for application processing. Direct all inquiries to the attention of Blessing Nuga (Nuga@tc.edu).

Visiting Scholar Administrative Fee

Please note that applications received after February 1, 2017 will be assessed a nonrefundable administrative fee of USD$400 for first time applicants and a nonrefundable renewal fee of USD$100 for extension applicants. Scholars whose applications are approved will receive a link via email to access the online payment site, Cashnet. The Cashnet payment site only accepts credit cards (VISA, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Masterpass). Scholars unable to pay by credit card can submit payment via wire transfer. Please contact the program manager, Blessing Nuga (nuga@tc.columbia.edu), for the TC wire transfer form. If paying by wire transfer, please allow 1-2 weeks for processing. Also note that some banks may charge an additional fee for international wire transfers; please check with your banking institution to verify this. Please make sure that the email address on your application is correct, as the Cashnet access link will be sent directly to this address.
