Housing

It can be very difficult to find housing that is right for you in New York City.  The Office of International Services wants to ensure that your housing search is a good and positive experience.

Housing Tips and Advice:

  • Be careful when using certain online sites such as Craigslist, which can contain housing scams; you can utilize google to research what types of housing scams currently exist
  • Never pay or give any money upfront without first seeing the living space in person
  • Be sure to visit the neighborhood(s) that you are interested in both during the day and at night
  • If you are overseas and it is not possible for you to see the living space before you enter the United States it is important to first read the housing information on the Teachers College Residence Life website or a good housing resource such as a highly recommended real estate company
  • Research various neighborhoods so that you will know certain neighborhoods or areas to avoid, such as Central Harlem or the Morningside Park at night
  • If the United States is not your country of permanent residence when you are signing a lease or a sublease take note of the duration of the lease and how you can get out of the lease agreement if an emergency situation arises
  • It is very important to ask a lot of questions; the more details that you can obtain about the living space, the building, the neighborhood, etc. the better
  • Keep in mind that it may take awhile to find a new place to live if your initial place does not work out
  • Setting up an appointment or seeing a living space does not guarantee that you will get the apartment; the renter may have many other prospects but if you come prepared to pay a deposit (i.e. carry your check book), you may be considered over other prospects
  • Consider and contact several options.  You may not receive a response from every place that you are interested in but it is important to keep looking at different options
