Meetings and Deadlines

Review Information and Dates

The review schedule for applications varies depending on the level (Exempt, Expedited, or Standard) at which the proposed study is determined to be.  Refer to the information below for the various review policies regarding Exempt, Expedited, and Standard studies.  Note that researchers are urged to plan ahead and allow time for review regardless of protocol review level.  Time allowances should also be made for projects that require approval from other IRBs (e.g., the New York City Board of Education, etc.).

REVIEW OF EXEMPT APPLICATIONS

During the academic year and the summer, Exempt applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.  All applications are reviewed in chronological order of receipt, and review of Exempt applications generally takes 7-10 business days.

REVIEW OF EXPEDITED APPLICATIONS

Expedited applications are also reviewed on a rolling basis.  During the school year, review of Expedited applications takes approximately 4 weeks, or longer, depending on when in the review cycle they are received and the number of Expedited applications received ahead of yours to be reviewed.   We often have a backlog of applications toward the end of each semester and appreciate your patience as these are assigned for review.
We will have very few, if any, Expedited reviews during Winter Break.

During the summer, there will be very few Expedited reviews.  We will process applications as they are submitted, but the process will take longer than during the academic year (more than likely at least a month).

REVIEW OF STANDARD FULL BOARD APPLICATIONS

The IRB meets once a month during the school year to review Standard-level applications.

Projects that require Full Committee/Standard review include: most physiological or medical research; research involving vulnerable subject populations (e.g., individuals with disabilities, prisoners, pregnant women); and  projects where  the consequences of a loss of confidentiality between PI and the participant would be severe (i.e., possibly place subjects at risk of criminal or civil liability).  Most applications DO NOT require Full Committee review.

'Materials Due' and meeting dates below apply only to applications requiring Full Committee/Standard review.  If your application requires Full Committee review, applications should be submitted no less than two weeks prior to the scheduled meeting date.

NOTIFICATION:  We will do our best to keep you informed of the progress of your application throughout the review process, generally via email.  We will acknowledge receipt of materials, and as part of a preliminary review, we will contact you if there are missing components, if something is unclear, or if we determine there is an issue or problem that needs to be addressed before your application can be scheduled for review.   We will also notify you via email once your application has been reviewed and again when it has been approved.
