Strengthening Developmental Education:
What Have We Learned, and What's Next?

Recent efforts to increase the national college degree completion rate have been focused on community colleges, where completion rates have historically been relatively low. One reason is the fact that the majority of incoming community college students (and many of those entering public four-year institutions) are not prepared for college coursework. In an effort to increase student attainment, community colleges have instituted a variety of curricula and programs to improve students' skills.

NCPR's 2012 national conference built on its successful 2010 conference in presenting the most recent empirical work on developmental education and related efforts that address students' poor preparation. The conference examined several major new community college initiatives and addressed the question of whether bolder reforms are needed to help more students succeed, and what these reforms might look like. In doing so, the conference aimed to help establish a solid foundation for future research, practice, and policy.

Featured Sessions

Four panel sessions focused on (1) findings on the effectiveness of developmental education, (2) discrete reforms of developmental education, (3) reforms to the relationship between high school and college, and (4) comprehensive reforms to developmental education. Following each panel, conference attendees attended break-out sessions led by key practitioners and researchers.
