What is Urban Advantage?
Urban Advantage (UA) is a citywide science education initiative that partners eight renowned science-rich New York City cultural institutions with the New York City Department of Education and public middle schools along with their teachers, students, and families for the purpose of scientific discovery and learning. In addition to the American Museum of Natural History which administers the initiative, the participating institutions include the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, New York Botanical Garden, New York Hall of Science, Queens Botanical Garden, Staten Island Zoo, Wildlife Conservation Society-Bronx Zoo, and New York Aquarium. Urban Advantage aims to enhance the capacity of the City’s middle schools to engage students in challenging science education and promote the achievement of science goals and standards.

What are the Urban Advantage Demonstration Schools?
Beginning in the fall of 2006, Urban Advantage identified 10 demonstration sites, i.e., schools that show evidence of exemplary or full implementation of the program. The demonstration sites were selected in order to: (1) Provide schools and science institutions with images of UA implementation and a knowledge base of the conditions that support full implementation; (2) Inform policy makers of the scientific resources for schools available at science-rich institutions; (3) Provide other cities with a model of collaboration among science-rich institutions and the department of education to meet city, state, and national science education goals; (4) Provide the public at large and families of middle school students, in particular, of images of students and families engaged in science learning in museums, zoos, gardens, and aquariums.
What is NCREST’s role?
Beginning in 2007, NCREST will document the UA project with a focus on the demonstration schools. The project will collect data to develop a knowledge base in order to create print materials that address the four purposes of the project. The documentation will facilitate the development of a process that enables the partners to share their knowledge amongst themselves, with departments of education, and with science-rich institutions and education stakeholders in other cities.
