What the heck is an algorithm? Well, you can use one to bake a cake -- and New York City uses them to decide what high school your child will go to. Amy Stuart Wells, Professor of Sociology and Education, blogging for the New York Times' School Book, warns that the stakes are a bit higher in the latter situation.
