TC held its first annual Health Fair in the Student Lounge on September 28 as part of a newly initiated wellness program. The wellness program, dubbed TC-HC for "Teachers College Healthy Community," was developed through the efforts of Tom Fiorella, manager of Administrative Services, to create a sense of community within the Dining Services area.It expanded to a collaboration among Dining Services, the Office of Personnel, the Office of Student Life, and the unions, Local 2110 UAW and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 707 in putting together the Health Fair. The event was coordinated by Kim Berman, a TC alumna from Nutrition Education who works in administrative services as a liaison to the sponsoring groups.
The Health Fair allowed students, faculty and staff to taste low-fat foods, check out their cholesterol levels, body fat percentages and blood pressure, calculate their health/age determination and enjoy a massage. People who participated in three of the activities received a TC-HC cup.
Monthly health events are scheduled to take place
on selected Wednesdays throughout the school year, according to Berman.
They will cover topics such as women's health, fitness, AIDS awareness,
nutrition and stress management.
