When the U.S. women’s fencing squad takes to the floor at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London next week, TC alumna Maya Lawrence (MA Education, ‘06), will be leading the charge. Lawrence, 32, whose weapon is epee, will fence in the individual competition on July 30th and the team competition on August 4th.
The five-foot, seven-inch, 141-pound Lawrence, a right-hander, is ranked second among U.S. women’s epeeists and 29th among women worldwide. She fenced on senior world championship teams in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011, when she upset former Olympic champion Laura Flessel-Colovic. Most recently, she won a gold medal in the team epee event at the 2011 Pan American Games.
Born in New York City, Lawrence lives in Teaneck, New Jersey, but has been training in St. Maur, France, where she also serves as an English language tutor.
