Teachers College President Susan Fuhrman was honored this week by Education Update as one of three Distinguished Education Leaders of 2013 in New York City.

The award-winning weekly publication cited Fuhrman’s numerous achievements as President of TC, which include strengthening the College as an internationally recognized center for the study and application of new knowledge about learning; the launch of New York City’s first-ever university-supported K-8 public school; the creation of the Teachers College Partnership Schools Consortium, through which the College leverages its teaching, research and service in support of schools in upper Manhattan; the establishment of TC’s new Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, which seeks to promote access, availability, affordability, and knowledge of healthy foods in New York City and nationwide; the creation of a new Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis; and increasing financial aid to TC’s students.

“I am proud to help honor a true New Yorker and fellow Hunter High School graduate,” said Hunter College President Jennifer Raab, who presented Fuhrman with her award. “Susan Fuhrman has been a leader in demonstrating how a graduate school of education can function as a resource for schools and educators at every level, both locally and nationwide.”

Accepting the award, Fuhrman applauded Education Update for also honoring 30 New York City school administrators and teachers.  ”It’s important that we celebrate this city’s fine educators, she said.  ”They work tirelessly every day – under sometimes difficult conditions – to ensure the children of New York City have access to an excellent education.”

The other educators honored by Education Update were Mary Brabeck, the Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and Professor of Applied Psychology; and Lisa S. Coico, President of the City College of New York and a nationally prominent educator and researcher in microbiology and immunology.

Education Update is published by Pola Rosen (Ed.D.’80). Its readership includes parents, education professionals, politicians, business leaders and foundation heads.
