Required Reading Lists

The Prince William school administrators in Washington D.C. are proposing a list of required reading material on a grade-by-grade level, which would then be taught to the entire county's students, according to The Washington Post. On May 23, an article entitled, "School Officials Ponder Required-Reading List," appeared in The Washington Post and discussed the effects this proposal would have on teachers and students. Lucy Calkins, professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, commented that this plan may leave slower readers behind and would not challenge more advanced readers since each student has individual needs.
