Reading Specialist Program Invites Expert on Adult Learning

Dolores Perin, Associate Professor of Psychology and Education and Coordinator of the Health and Behavior Science Studies Department's Reading Specialist Program, hosted Stephen Reder, University Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Linguistics at Portland State University. Speaking to students enrolled in "Theory and Techniques of Assessment and Intervention in Reading," Reder discussed the research he is doing at the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL). This center, based at Harvard University, works collaboratively with Rutgers, Portland State, and the University of Tennessee. Reder is the Principal Investigator for its major project, the "Longitudinal Study of Adult Learning," which is attempting to understand the ways in which adults acquire new literacy and language abilities and the roles that adult education programs and policies play in supporting that development.
