Fest Highlights Creative Cooking

On a recent walk through the Dane County Farmers' Market on the Capitol Square, Deanna Schneider and a neighbor decided to buy identical ingredients and challenge each other to a cook-off. Schneider's concoction turned into a prize-winning recipe she will dish up at Madison's seventh annual Food for Thought Festival taking place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard during the Farmers' Market.

A group of 12 judges, specialists in culinary arts and food, selected Schneider's recipe from more than 200 based on flavor, ease of making and use of Wisconsin ingredients, said Pamilyn Hatfield, chef of the former Opera House Restaurant and a caterer.

Joan Dye Gussow, former chairman of the Nutrition Education Program at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, and author of five books on healthy eating, will kick off the festival at 7:30 p.m. Friday with a talk on "Pyramids and Parsnips: Just Eat Food" at the UW Health Sciences Learning Center, 750 Highland Ave.
