According to a new study, a ballooning number of charter schools rely heavily on uncredentialed teachers, fail to acquire federal funds to aid low-achieving or learning-disabled children, and display the same finance disparities that beset regular public schools.

Leanne Stahnke, a doctoral student in the department of Curriculum and Teaching, has been conducting a research project on youth engaged in antiracism work. As she interviewed youth activists, she began to think about the way youth are portrayed in research, and the lack of research on youth activism. Along with John Broughton, Associate Professor of Psychology and Education, she organized a conference on activist youth and education to combat the prevailing images of youth as at-risk.

The 2003 US News rankings are out. TC was ranked fourth, tied with Vanderbilt’s Peabody College, with a combined score of 90. Harvard Education School was ranked first, Stanford second (with a score of 95), and UCLA’s School of Education was third (with a score of 93).
