All About Equity
A little over two years ago, a committee of faculty, students, professional staff, union members, trustees and senior officers of Teachers College began meeting regularly to produce a plan-'"approved in May 2004 by the Board of Trustees-'"that establishes educational equity as the new mission of the College. President Levine elaborates below on implementation of the plan, which includes the creation of a think tank, a state-by-state report card, an annual symposium, and demonstration projects in New York City.

Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford University, delivered TC's annual Virginia and Leonard Marx Lecture on October 20 in Horace Mann Auditorium. In her talk, "Reclaiming Childhood and Education: The Current Challenge for Progressive Education," Darling-Hammond, author of the award-winning book The Right to Learn, decried high-stakes testing and other features of the federal No Child Left Behind program.

Feminists On Film: Gloria Steinem and friends discuss women in the movies
“Bodies In Motion: Images of Women in Contemporary Film & Video,” the latest event in Kelvin Sealey’s and Professor John Broughton’s Project Citizen, brought renowed feminists Gloria Steinem, bell hooks, and Hyun Kyung Chung to the Columbia campus to talk about images of women in the media.

The Petrie Fellowship, in its first year of implementation, gives selected TC students $50,000 or $10,000 in exchange for a commitment to teach in inner-city schools. TC President Arthur Levine calls it a “Rhodes scholarship for teachers.”

Class from China
Twenty-five presidents and vice-presidents of China’s leading universities have come to the U.S. for professional development and to take part in a month-long seminar at Teachers College on quality and faculty development in higher education. “The preparation of effective education leaders is a key challenge in Chinese education today,” said TC Professor Mun Tsang, Director of the Center on Chinese Education and the organizer of the seminar at an opening reception on October 20.

The Gottesman Libraries Dedication
The Gottesman Libraries, one year after the groundbreaking ceremony, were dedicated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 4. A crowd of TC students, faculty and staff lined the Main Hall corridor just outside the entrance to the Libraries as donors Ruth and Sandy Gottesman made the commemoration official.
