Campaign Exceeds Goal with $10.8 Million Gift
With a $10.8 million gift, the Campaign for Teachers College has surpassed its $140 million goal and continues. The gift, the largest in TC's history, is from Gerard and Lilo Leeds for The National Academy for Excellent Teaching at TC. The Academy will provide professional development to teachers and principals in secondary schools in New York and across America serving predominantly high need, underserved and underperforming students.

Medalists, who included Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, singer Pete Seeger, Riverside Church's Reverend James A. Forbes, Jr., filmmaker Ken Burns and civil rights attorney Morris Dees, received the Teachers College Medal for Distinguished Service at the first double-ceremony master's convocation held by the College.

As part of the Institute on Urban and Minority Education's Mellon Visiting Minority Scholars program, William G. Demmert, Jr. spoke at Teachers College on "Improving Academic Performance Among Native American Students: A review and analysis of the literature." Through a grant from the Mellon foundation, the visiting scholars program brings up to six prominent minority scholars to Teachers College to give informal seminars and spend several days on campus to dialogue with faculty and students.

Richard Lee Colvin, an award-winning education writer with the Los Angeles Times, is the new director of the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media at Teachers College.
Published: 5/1/2003Petrie Foundation Multi-Million Dollar Gift Supports Teachers College NYC Teacher Fellowship Program
With a five-year gift from the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation designed to change the substance and image of the teaching profession on a national level, 100 future New York City teachers will receive fellowships to Teachers College. Fifty will be in the amount of $50,000 to cover the full cost of tuition and living expenses while they complete a master’s degree and requirements for teacher certification. The other 50, called Petrie Finalists, will receive a partial scholarship from the Foundation and an additional award from the College toward the cost of tuition. The Fellowship awards are based on excellent academic performance and financial need.

In April, the Teachers College Board of Trustees elected former Newark City Councilman and community activist Cory Booker.

On May 7, the Carnegie Corporation of New York named 13 new Carnegie Scholars, including emerging and recognized scholars at American universities and research institutions. Xiadong Lin, who is Associate Professor of Technology and Education at TC, was among them.

Interim Dean Aaron Pallas and the Faculty Executive Committee’s (FEC) subcommittee on Race, Culture, and Diversity awarded two Faculty Diversity Awards for the academic year 2003-2004. They went to Gregory M. Anderson (Organization and Leadership) for, “A Critical Exploration of Curricular Reform and Diversity in American Higher Education,” and to Lesley Bartlett (International and Transcultural Studies), for “Language and Literacy Practices Among Latino Communities in New York City: Constructing Collaborative Research.”

Teachers College has received a gift of $25,000 from alumna Betty Fairfax to be awarded to students of color to enhance their opportunities for professional development in preparation for careers in urban schools.

Promising to show post-secondary education decision makers where the “rubber meets the road” for e-learning and how advances in technology and curriculum design can enhance student achievement, the Third Annual Education Technology Summit, hosted by Teachers College, came to Morningside Heights from May 12 through 16th.

Published: 5/1/2003NCSPE Hosts Conference on For-Profit Higher Education
On May 1st and 2nd the National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education hosted a conference on “Markets, Profits, and the Future of Higher Education” at Teachers College. The conference was the first of its kind in the country and was co-sponsored by The Community College Research Center at Teachers College, The Futures Project at Brown University, and the For-Profit Higher Education Project at the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia. Approximately 90 people participated, many of them already knowledgeable and engaged in the field of for-profit higher education.

Yokatsu High School students from Okinawa, Japan presented a performance for peace at Horace Mann Auditorium on March 31, 2003 with the coordination of Peace Education Center, Teachers College.

Chuck Kinzer (Math, Science and Technology) is the 2003 winner of the Computers in Reading Award from the International Reading Association (IRA) and he gave a keynote address at the IRA Annual Conference on May 11th in recognition of this. The award is for the multimedia case-based instructional system he has created, which is being used in colleges around the country to help teachers teach reading better.

TC is renovating two adjacent 850-square-foot classrooms on the fourth floor of Horace Mann Hall with a generous grant from the Booth Ferris Foundation, whose primary interest is in the field of education, including private higher education, theological schools, and public education initiatives.

Teachers College is building a new two-building dormitory to house their graduate students. The project site is located on a mid-block, vacant, through-lot parcel that Teachers College owns, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, 121st and 122nd streets.
