Business and Education: Partners or Rivals The numbers tell the story.
"Eight years ago, there were no publicly traded education firms," explained Joshua Lewis, Managing Director of E.M. Warburg Pincus, the world's largest venture equity firm. "Today, $20 billion is in the market. To go from zero to $20 billion in seven years is remarkable." Lewis was one of several experts in for-profit education invited to participate in a daylong conference at Teachers College earlier this year. TC's Institute on Education and Government (IEG) convened the conference.

Published: 9/1/1999Experts on Vouchers and Charter Schools Offer Suggestions at Agenda Setting Conference for a TC New Research Center
The two-day conference on the agenda for the new National Center for the Study of Privatization in Education was a chance for Henry M. Levin to reverse roles. Instead of leading the discussion, Levin, who is TC's new William Heard Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education, spent much of the time listening attentively and taking notes. That's as he intended it. The goal of the conference was to solicit comments and recommendations from scholars, students, teachers, government officials, philanthropists and others about the issues that should be explored by the new center.

"All students can learn. No exceptions. No excuses." That mantra is part of the founding philosophy of Teachers College. It is part of the mission of The Jill and Ken Iscol Lecture Series, recently established at TC. And it was at the heart of the speech First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered as the inaugural lecturer of the Iscol series.

Maria E. Richa and Sean Riordan, two master's degree students in the Department of Arts and Humanities, have won the 23rd Annual Student Exhibition at the National Arts Club, which was established in 1898 and has presented many firsts in the arts.

When Sandra V. Sandy and Kathleen M. Cochran describe their work at the International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution (ICCCR) at Teachers College, they get a variety of interesting reactions. Sandy and Cochran are co-creators of the Peaceful Kids, Safe Kids program, a conflict resolution program for preschoolers. Sandy is ICCCR’s director of research and Cochran is director of training for the program.
