Re-Imagining New Orleans
The elephant in the room. It's the image for a bad situation that's being ignored. But for a small group of students and alumni from Teachers College and Columbia University who visited New Orleans early in 2006, it may have been forever eclipsed by the sight of a 180-ton barge sitting in the middle of a street in the city's abandoned Ninth Ward.

She's been a New York City public school teacher; a political wife (her husband was the late Congressman S. Her past involvement with the College includes service on both the Alumni Council and the President's Advisory Council, helping to renovate the campus and, most recently, generously supporting The Campaign for Educational Equity. Verna Francis was one of the last audience members to approach the microphone at TC's two-day symposium on educational equity back in October, but her words drew applause from the remaining crowd. "We must not refer to our African American and Hispanic children as -'at risk' and -'disadvantaged,'" cautioned Francis, 74, a TC alumna. "The very terms are demoralizing to teachers, to parents and to the children. Children need to be told they can achieve anything they want to achieve."

Teaching for Today - The Making of a Teacher
Watching the horrors of the South Asian tsunami, one wondered: if only certain social structures existed, would this natural disaster have been so devastating? So it goes with urban education, where we face what disaster experts might call a permanent emergency. Some education schools still argue that when learning activities are strong enough, classroom management is a non-issue. Some scholars envision political and economic solutions for our segregated, under-resourced schools. Yet the classroom teacher is left with one certainty: disasters will happen.

Merton Coulter, of the University of Georgia, who encouraged him to continue his quest. Coulter predicted Miller would make it to the governor's mansion someday. It turned out to be a safe bet.
