TC Professor John Allegrante has co-edited with Professor Margaret Barry of the National University of Ireland, Galway, two special issues of peer-reviewed journals that focus on the efforts to strengthen standards and quality assurance in professional preparation for health promotion and health education. Campaign for Equity Pushes for Support of Disadvantaged Students and Families Beyond the Classroom
The Campaign for Educational Equity at Teachers College launched in January a task force that will consider ways to implement a child’s right to a sound, basic education comprehensively and guarantee children living in poverty in New York access to a range of social and educational services outside of the traditional classroom. Understanding the Long-term Impact of School Desegregation
As the nation inaugurates its first black president, a new book co-authored by TC faculty member Amy Stuart Wells, Both Sides Now: The Story of School Desegregation's Graduates (University of California Press, 2009), suggests that Barack Obama's generation is ready to take on issues of racial inequality and segregation, in part because so many members of this generation are graduates of desegregated schools. Deputy Mayor: Mayoral Control Has Been Good for NYC Schools
New York City public schools are much better off under mayoral control than they were in the old local school district system, Dennis M. Beyond NCLB Hype: A New Book by Michael Rebell
Featuring the work of Michael Rebell and Jessica Wolff who in their recently published book, Moving Every Child Ahead, argue that the important goals of the federal No Child Left Behind Act have been undermined by the impossible demand that 100% of America’s children reach required proficiency levels by 2014. Instead, they believe NCLB should be revised to require serious efforts to give all children a 'meaningful educational opportunity' and offer Congress clear recommendations on how to do so. Breaking Faith with NYC’s Schools

In 2004, when the New York Times spotlighted research showing that students at conventional public schools were outperforming their charter school counterparts, it triggered a firestorm of claims and counter-claims by education scholars. To Jeffrey Henig, TC Professor of Political Science and Education, this exchange exemplified a disturbing trend: the failure of supposedly objective research to transcend ideology and settle important policy questions of the day.
